Imagine your perfect piece of fried chicken. Perfect golden batter.. Juicy chicken.. Perfect combination of spices.. And the crunch! That sensation of your teeth breaking through a crisp layer of batter that crumbles onto your tongue. Ohhhhh lawdy.
And do you know where you never get that? KFC. It always SEEMS like a good idea, but it’s not. Instead of crispy golden perfection, 99% of the time what you get is greasy, soggy disappointment >: (
However I never make that mistake any more, because now I know that my perfect fried chicken lives at Malaysian comfort food joint, Straits of Malacca. The dish is called something like crispy chicken thigh, and it also comes with delicious Malay style fried rice (which I get without the prawns). The sauce is also pretty damn tasty.
Of course they do all the usual suspects pretty well too, char kway teow, nasi lemak, etc. And the serves are quite generous for the price, which hovers somewhere around $10-12 per main.
The Glen Waverley and Prahran restaurants are both pretty consistent, I haven’t tried the City location.
